The Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards
The Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards took place this weekend at London’s Koko. It was not only a great opportunity to listen to some of the best music the world has to offer but also to check out some of the acts sure to feature prominently in 2013. UK DJ Peterson is surely one of the most influential movers and shakers in the music industry today. One of his latest discoveries, soul singer Jose James, has just released his album ‘No Beginning No End’ for one of the world’s most prestigious labels, Blue Note, and acts are forever jostling for his attention.
Saturday’s event was packed with young and established talent. Neneh Cherry made an appearance with jazz collaborators The Thing alongside the likes of Nick Mulvey and one of the most interesting acts of the moment, The Invisible. ‘Stubborn Heart’, by the group of the same name won album of the year with runners-up ‘Channel Orange’ by Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar’s wonderful debut ‘Good Kid, Maad City’, which we have already showered with well-deserved praise. ‘Coltrane Rules’ by Gary Bartz scooped the jazz award, followed by Nene Cherry & The Thing with ‘The Cherry Thing’ and ‘Black Radio’ by Robert Glasper, another artist on Blue Note we have recently featured. To Marcos Valle, Brazilian music star who has played a major role in some of today’s best releases, went an award for his production role in countless soul jazz master works.
And as for the new acts to keep in the crosshairs for 2013 Gilles Peterson chose Hiatus Kaiyote, The HICS, Romare and many, many more we will bring to you here in the Tia Maria Room.
