Exclusive interview with Emily King, the live music act the Tia Maria Room party in London
Tia Maria Room Montreal
On December 6th, 2012 Tia Maria hosted the Tia Maria Room at The Club House, in downtown Montreal. Rich red lighting set the scene for media, bloggers, and music lovers to enjoy an exclusive performance by Jarvis Church complimented by Tia Maria cocktails. We sat down with Jarvis Church before he took the stage so we could chat about his new album, The Soul Station Vol. 1: The Songs Of Sam Cooke. This album is the first in a series of The Soul Station albums drawing inspiration from musicians who have impacted his career. For each album, he first records a few songs for the radio, then the rest of the album is done so “you can listen and feel the comfort and sound of the original artist.” Before creating the album, Jarvis read the biography of Sam Cooke and created Vol.1 in his honour, being that he is “regarded as originator of soul, and first to merge gospel with rock.”
Before the show, we noticed how well dressed the entire Soul Sessions band was, all black everything. Very chic. Jarvis said it was no accident, “the style had to be just right.” He wanted the look of the band to draw from traditional soul aesthetic, with well-tailored suits, and dark, luxurious hues. Jarvis was quick to thank Strellson for outfitting the band in true retro fashion. Jarvis Church and the Soul Sessions put on an excellent performance filled with energy. By the end, the crowd joined the band on stage for what felt like concert in our own living room. The Tia Maria Room! The show ended with ‘Do it Better’, from the most recent album. Jarvis joked in our interview that he loves this song so much he might actually perform it twice!
We finished the night with Tia Maria cocktails and soulful music. Please enjoy the event photos below, and make sure to follow Tia Maria Canada @tiamariacanada.
