The Great Gatsby

There are many reasons why ‘The Great Gatsby’ is one of the most anticipated movies of the year: not only what is rumored to be a sensational performance by Leonardo DiCaprio in the film, inspired by the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, but also a stunning soundtrack produced by Jay-Z. The artist has used his own original music alongside songs by others, like a great tribute to Amy Winehouse – a cover of Back to Black – performed by Andre 3000 and Beyonce. He has shrewdly used hip hop, jazz and urban music to give a contemporary feel to the classic tale. Other musicians performing cover versions include Jack White’s U2 number Love is Blindness, while Beyonce’s own ‘Crazy in Love’ is sung by Emeli Sandé together with Brian Ferry. Lana del Rey penned ‘Young and Beautiful’ especially for the soundtrack which also includes artists like The XX with Together and Sia with ‘Kill and Run’.

The soundtrack is born not only of the passion of Jay-Z for urban music, but also DiCaprio, who was a frequent visitor at the producer’s studio during the recording of the soundtrack, along with director Baz Luhrmann. Together they conjured up a staggering range of styles and influences to capture the spirit of the 1920s “Jazz Age” for a modern audience, infusing their heady scenes with soul, funk, and hip hop.
