The adventures of Theophilus London
Two stars come together: the rapper of the moment, Theophilus London, who was such a hit at Amsterdam’s Tia Maria Room, and Rihanna, who requires no introduction, produce the sweeping, soulful ‘Unapologetic’.
Meanwhile Theophilus hits Paris in the tradition of the bebop artists of the Fifties and Sixties, hanging out with the likes of the production collective Club Cheval and remixing ‘Jump’ into a veritable baguette of hip hop-meets-electro, house and disco. Theophilus is beginning to get known. More than known – he is beginning to hit the big time, stepping up from his cult status into the role of style icon with an infinite attention to detail – be it sartorial or musical. In fact ‘Jump’ comes as a bit of a surprise, given how busy he is hunkered down in “Paree” with his muckers working on the album to follow his successful debut ‘Timez Are Weird These Days’, but it will only go to strengthen his reputation, and as for his profile… well you don’t get much bigger than Rihanna. It’s that attention to detail again – Theophilus intends to get it right. Catch him in April at California’s Coachella Festival – no easy gig, given it’s rock heritage. But Theophilus is not one to duck a challenge.
