Their fusion of rave and indie is one of the things that makes them unique, with a new album always eagerly awaited. Fans need not wait much longer
We’ve mentioned it here often enough and finally it’s arrived: ‘Matangi’ by M.I.A. – the most comprehensive work of urban music of recent times. A synthesis of urban language, metropolis moods, crossing cultural and linguistic barriers: world music for the new millennium designed by a performer who uses hip-hop as part of a coherent vision that ranges from dance to dubstep. The album propels us into the future, almost on to another plain – “my more spiritual side” – as she puts it. This does not mean, however, that she abandons the rebellious spirit that has made her such an idol.
‘Matangi’ comes after a period of intense activity including the publication of an autobiography and collaborations with the world of fashion. The album follows a mixtape, ‘Vicki Leekx’, made live in the studio, packed full of ideas snd influences. Alongside ‘Matangi’, it’s like a manifesto for a new millennium.
