M.I.A. – Matangi

M.I.A. is the most flamboyant expression of the deep cultural wealth of new urban music, which fuses influences from all over the world and experiences way beyond the ordinary. Her music, a hybrid of the electronic and exotic, has made her one of the most desired and admired performers not just at clubs and music festivals but the most chic fashion runways. And she chose the recent Paris Fashion Show to preview her new, highly anticipated album, ‘Matangi’, which is out this April. It looks like it’s going to be worth waiting for: fast-paced pop infused with hip hop and packing a potent emotional punch. The album was produced in collaboration with Hit Boy, one of the hip hop producers of the moment, whose recent successes have included Kayne West’s ‘Clique’.

The new album looks like an attempt by M.I.A. to reach a wider audience without sacrificing that startling originality. World music from the heart of the city, dubstep with its gaze turned East. Experiencing ‘Matangi’ you could be forgiven for imaging yourself in a film, such is its cinematic flavour. Only how will it end? We will have to wait until April to find out.
