Janelle Monae

She’s simply the most popular voice of new American soul at the moment. Janelle Monae has a voice that comes from the big, sentimental tradition of R&B, but with a look and sound that for all her love of the past is pointed toward the future, enriching her interpretations with a modern twist that makes her one of the most interesting singers around.

It’s no coincidence that even fellow Minneapolitan Prince, true pop royalty, wanted to collaborate in the  recording of her new album, ‘The Electric Lady’, which showcases all that’s best in contemporary black music from funk to soul to hip hop, jazz even.

As well as Prince, there’s also jazz singer and bass virtuoso Esperanza Spalding and Erykah Badu, the undisputed star of new soul. Catch the album asap.
