Emily King Interview

Emily King was the star of the Tia Maria Room concert at Village Underground on the 10th of December. We had a chance to talk to Emily about her career and inspiration and to ask her to create a special playlist featuring her all time favorite song, which you can listen to after the interview below.

Emily, your debut album, ‘East Side Story’ and your EP  ‘Seven’ were one of Gilles Peterson’s favourites, how important was his support?
It’s been amazing to have Gilles’s support! I have so much love and respect for him. He was the first person to really introduce my music to the UK.

Recently you were the opening act for Emeli Sandé in England. What can you tell us about that experience?
Royal Albert Hall! It was awesome. The audience were super warm and receptive…plus it was wonderful hearing Emeli perform each night. I’d been a big fan of her music since long before the tour.

What was the first record you listened and what did it mean to you?
Hmm. I can’t remember…but I did go to Tower Records at one point just to purchase Queen Latifa’s “Black Reign” album…which meant everything at the time.

What are your main influences?
New York City, all music with heart and soul, my mom & dad.

Which artist would you like to work with?
Andrew VanWyngarden.

And a DJ you’d like to remix your work?

Any news about upcoming projects?
I’ve been collaborating with J. Most on lots of new tunes. We’re expecting to release a few new singles at the end of 2013.
