Exclusive interview with Emily King, the live music act the Tia Maria Room party in London
Emily King @ Tia Maria Room event in London
Viewed by new soul explosion godfather DJ Gilles Peterson as ‘one of the best songwriters around at the moment’, 27-year-old Grammy-nominated New Yorker Emily King had been invited to perform at the Tia Maria Room event on December 10 at the Village Underground, London. One of the soul sisters who best represents the synthesis of contemporary urban and traditional blues that has come to dominate so much of today’s music scene, Emily has a repetoire that combines originality and respect for roots that won her a Grammy nomination in 2007 for her debut East Side Story. Alicia Keys is a fan and you can see why – her songs, whose influences range across the musical spectrum from blues to rock, folk and soul, have a first-hand intensity, each it’s own little universe the audience is invited to join. All this led to an extraordinary series of UK shows last month when Emily opened for Emeli – Sande, who has helped bring soul once again to the top of the international charts.
Look out for the songs from East Side Story and Seven as well as her new number Ordinary Heart from her much-anticipated album due out next year.
