David Byrne and St Vincent
A pair that mine a seam of elegant contemporary pop – St Vincent and David Byrne – have came together to create an acclaimed album ‘Love This Giant’ and now release a free to download EP Brass Tactics to promote their forthcoming tour. Byrne’s collaboration with Annie Clark is nothing new in so much as Byrne does nothing but new, be it his unforgettable career with the Talking Heads, who more or less invented the “new funk”, his magnificently eclectic solo career, or his appearance in the recent film ‘This Must Be The Place’.
Brass Tactics is available for download free at the band’s website and includes an unreleased live version of ‘Road to Nowhere’, one of the Talking Heads top hits, here completely re-worked. ‘Brass Tactics’ is a celebration of wind, a triumph of brass. It looks forward to a more full-bodied sound that really brings out the beauty of ballad’s like Cissus and has a live feel reminiscent of big band concerts as it re-explores previous album tracks from Love This Giant.
What was supposed to remain an isolated collaboration has become one of the most interesting musical adventures of recent times – unmissable. August
