Their fusion of rave and indie is one of the things that makes them unique, with a new album always eagerly awaited. Fans need not wait much longer
Alice Russell & Quantic
As leading members of Britain’s soul revival, it was probably inevitable that Alice Russell and Quantic would join forces. After all, not only do they share the same passion for live music – as comfortable on the festival stage as the tiny jazz club – both also share the same label, Tru Thoughts. The result is Look Around the Corner, one of the most intense releases of recent months, packed with passion, complexity and life-affirming melody. Russell’s vocals ride upon an airy string section, giving the album that Philadelphia feel, and it’s a feeling that overwhelms you even on first listen: you know in your bones this is classic soul, but infused with a fresh spirit. There’s a consistent aesthetic throughout the album reminiscent of cult labels like Chicago’s Chess Records where soul, funk, and blues met. Russell’s admiration of Minnie Riperton also shines through with her mix of simplicity and sensuality.
At London’s XoYo Club Russell also recently performed her new single Heartbreaker from her new album To Dust, due out in early 2013.
